Cats are fabulous animals. Their independence and intelligence can create such a fun-filled house pet experience. Unfortunately, caring for a cat is not always simple. Read on to learn more cat tips and to use them to make your cat healthy and happy.
If your cat is picky about drinking water, invest in a cat fountain. These battery operated or plug in fountains keep water circulating and aerated. Many cats prefer this. A cat fountain will help keep your cat out of the kitchen sink and the toilet. It will also help prevent your cat from pawing water onto the floor in search of fresh water.
An indoor cat who gets a taste of the outdoors will forever want to go outside. If you know your cat will always be an indoor cat, do your best to keep them from sneaking out. You can try to train your cat to stay in your yard when you are outside.
Protect your cat from strangling by making sure the cords of curtains and blinds are secured and out of reach. When you make or purchase a dangly toy for your cat, be sure to supervise during play. Put the toy away if you will not be around to watch.
Cats and electrical cords don’t mix. If you notice your cat has a habit of chewing on electric cords, try to bundle them up and hide them out of the cat’s reach. If that’s not possible, spray a little bit of bitter apple onto the cords. Not only is bitter apple non-toxic, cats absolutely hate the taste.
Feed your cats proper food. Remember that cats must eat meat. Only give your cats cat food to eat. Do not feed them or let them eat dog food. Dogs and cats have different nutritional needs and some of the ingredients in dog food could harm your cat. Feeding your cat dog food for food could also lead to malnourishment, among other issues.
Do not assume that because a medication is okay for you to take, that it is safe for your cat as well. Many medications made for humans are lethal to cats, such as acetaminophen containing drugs and aspirin. Always check with your veterinarian before you give your cat anything.
Do not allow your cat to stay bored all of the time. Cats need to exercise and play. Unfortunately there are too many cat owners who don’t properly exercise their cats. Cats that are bored may develop obsessive compulsive disorders, depression, or other issues that can harm their health. Make sure your cats have a wide variety of toys and plenty of room for active play. If you have an indoor cat, provide a kitty gym for them to climb on or a scratching post.
Cats make good pets if you take your time when you are learning about them. Use these tips at your discretion. Apply what you’ve just learned as you set out to properly care for your cat so that both of you lead happy lives.
