Cats bring many great rewards. Cats are energetic and a constant source of information. They’re also excellent defenders against household pests, like mice. Cats are generally really good about keeping pests out of a house but people sometimes don’t recognize how well they can hunt.
Keep your drape cords away from your cats. These can cause your cat to choke if they get a hold of it. This could seriously injure or even kill them. Make sure drapery cords are kept back to avoid this.
Make sure your cat has a collar if it goes outside. Cats can get lost, and they need a tag to be found. The tag should have at least the pet’s name and the number where you can be reached.
Keep dangerous chemicals away from your cat. Just like children, cats need to be kept away from items like cleaning materials since they could harm them. These chemicals are basically poison and if your cats consumes some or gets some on them, they could get very sick, get burned, or possibly die. Store these items in a place where your cat can’t find them or use a child-proof lock on their location.
An inexpensive rubber welcome mat helps keep cat food off your floor. This is also a great tool to keep your cat from tracking litter out of the box. Black rubber mats cost about three dollars at dollar stores. Put your cat food dish on one and your litter box on another.
When training a cat, take the proper approach. Encouragement works better than anger. If you are trying to teach a kitten to use a litterbox, for instance, yelling will only frighten a small cat. When the cat starts to go outside the box, gently place them in the box so they learn.
Let your cat exercise their hunting instinct. Cats are natural born hunters; however, this does not mean you need to allow mice to invade your home. Hide treats and toys throughout your home, and your cat will have a blast hunting down their treats. You can also find feather and laser toys that your cat can chase and pounce on.
Cats have a natural instinct to hunt small prey. This can sometimes be a problem if you have other small animals in your home. Make sure that bird cages are hanging from the ceiling. If you have a gerbil or hamster, make sure their cages are secure and up high out of your cats reach.
Never reprimand your cat for missing the litter box. Most of the time when this happens, it is because you are not taking proper care of the box. Punishing your cat will make it afraid of being close to you.
A cat might not seem to be as good of a hunter as a guard dog, but dogs won’t put in the effort to hunt small critters, and they aren’t as friendly around the family. Cats will go for the kill, unlike dogs. With these benefits, you can have a truly great companion.
