Cats are extremely clean animals that immediately want to remove any filth that they encounter during their day. Naturally, cats will lick themselves and wipe the dirt away with their tiny paws. However, you can do a much more efficient job with the right shampoos and moisturizers inside your own bathroom.
Shop at your local pet shelter for your next cat. There are tons of loving cats there, and the fees often cover the needed vet care. When a cat is adopted from an animal shelter it saves its life and it helps control the cat population.
Get a pet water fountain. Cats can be prone to dehydration, and running water entices them to drink. It is an evolutionary habit that developed because in the wild, running water is less likely to be contaminated than a stagnant pool. Your pet will enjoy the water more, and will drink more often.
Don’t try using dog food or products for your cat. Cats usually react negatively to items made especially for dogs. This is especially true of flea products. Dog flea prevention products will kill your cat. In fact, it is a good idea to separate your cat and dog for a few hours after your dog has taken flea medication.
An indoor cat who gets a taste of the outdoors will forever want to go outside. If you know your cat will always be an indoor cat, do your best to keep them from sneaking out. You can try to train your cat to stay in your yard when you are outside.
Don’t let your cat get frequently bored. Your cat needs plenty of exercise. Unfortunately, lots of people who own cats neglect this. A lack of stimulation can lead to psychological or medical problems for your cat, including depression, compulsive disorders, and chronic misbehavior. Give them room to play and a large number of toys. An indoor cat needs a good scratching post.
Cats love to much on grass and plants such as catnip. There are plants however that are poisonous to cats. Chrysanthemums and holly are beautiful and common around the Holidays, but can be very toxic to cats. Other plants that are toxic or lethal include lilies, rhubarb and daffodils.
Use short words when you want to express displeasure with your cat. A short ‘no’ will be remembered, even if not always followed. A lot of people think that cats don’t listen to anything, but short word commands are certainly understood by cats, and they will respond to those commands if you are consistent with them.
Speak with other cat owners about any issues you may be having. You may think it’s something you can take care of on your own, but other people that own cats could help. You can find several cat forums online where you can ask questions, or you can choose to simply call your vet for advice too.
Most cats do not like water at all and will go crazy if their owner tries placing them in a bath. This is why you have to get the cat accustom to water and teach them that it’s not a bad thing. Once your cat gets a look at its clean, shampooed fur, it’ll never be afraid of water again.
